Gas oven odd smell

Have you noticed your gas oven has odd gas smell whenever it’s in use? 😳 Recently, our gas stove started giving off a strange odor ( kerosene smell) whenever we turned it on. My wife immediately thought it was a gas leak, but after checking online, I learned that natural gas smells like rotten eggs due to the odorant added for safety.

Before calling the gas company, I did a quick check of the stove and oven. Oddly, the smell appeared on every burner on the stovetop and the oven below—which seemed impossible for a gas leak affecting multiple sections.

After some research, we discovered the real cause: product of combustion from nearby chemicals.

Here’s what happened:

    Gas oven odd smell

    • Somewhere in or near our home, someone had recently used or opened a stain, paint, varnish, or a similar compound, including certain cleaners.
    • Tiny molecules from these products mixed into the air.
    • When the gas stove’s flame burned 🔥, it also burned off these airborne molecules, producing the strange odor like kerosene smell(maybe burnt plastic smell).
    • Lighting a candle or lighter nearby produces a similar, though usually weaker, smell. The larger the flame, the stronger the odor.

Fortunately, this odor is temporary and will dissipate over the next few days as the molecules clear from the air. ⏳

Takeaway: Not every strange gas-like smell in your stove or oven is a gas leak. Sometimes, it’s just the air carrying leftover chemicals that react with an open flame.

    ⚠️ Important Safety Note:

    • If you feel you smell gas, especially when the oven is not in use, call your gas company or fire department immediately. 🚨

    • If you smell a bit of gas only when you start your oven or turn on a burner, it may be a weak igniter.
